About Tianxu AN

Acclaimed for his profound musicality and formidable technique, Chinese pianist Tianxu An has established himself as a significant talent on the international concert stage. His career was propelled to international attention in 2019 when, at the age of 20, he was awarded Fourth Prize and the Special Award for Courage and Restraint at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition. This achievement marked him as the highest-placed Chinese pianist at this prestigious event in 24 years.

Mr. An has since performed over a hundred recitals and concertos across more than ten countries. His engagements have taken him to many of the world's most esteemed venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Vienna Musikverein, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and China's National Centre for the Performing Arts.

He appears regularly as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, such as the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra "Evgeny Svetlanov." In his native China, he collaborates frequently with major ensembles including the China National Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra. These collaborations are guided by a distinguished list of conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Mikhail Pletnev, Vasily Petrenko, Yutaka Sado, Tang Muhai, and Lü Jia.

Mr. An's growing discography reflects his artistic stature. His debut solo album, featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev, was released globally by the award-winning French label Alpha Classics. It was met with critical acclaim; Gramophone magazine noted his "natural affinity" with these composers, while France's Classica declared that the album "announces An Tianxu's position at the forefront of the international professional field." A subsequent live recital album was released by NCPA Classics, and a third solo recording is scheduled for release on the Signum Classics label in 2026.

His compelling story and musicianship have been featured in major publications across the globe, from The Philadelphia Inquirer and Musical America (which named him a "Monthly New Artist") in the United States, to the U.K.'s Pianist and Gramophone magazines.

Tianxu An's formative training began at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing under the guidance of Professor Chang Hua. He continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, earning a Bachelor of Music degree under Meng-Chieh Liu, and most recently completed his Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School as a student of Robert McDonald. He currently serves on the piano faculty of his alma mater, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
